Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway on the Verge of Completion
Ahmedabad, Gujarat The Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, a major 108-kilometre infrastructure project connecting Ahmedabad’s Sardar Patel Ring Road (SP Ring Road) to Adhelai village near Bhavnagar, is on the verge of completion. As per recent updates, nearly 98% of the construction work on the Dholera Expressway is finished. Once operational, it will reduce the travel time between Ahmedabad and Dholera SIR to just 40–45 minutes.
Boost for Dholera SIR Smart City
The Dholera Special Investment Region (Dholera SIR) — India’s first greenfield smart city — is witnessing rapid development. The area has already attracted major investments, including the Tata Group’s ₹91,000 crore semiconductor plant, marking a milestone in India’s tech manufacturing journey. The expressway will serve as a critical link for industrial, commercial, and residential growth in the Dholera Smart City region.
Remaining Works and Bottlenecks
Despite significant progress, a few finishing works remain before the expressway is fully open to traffic:
1. Railway Overbridges (ROB):
• Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC): The steel bridge erection is
complete, and bitumen has been laid on one side. Expansion joint work is pending on the
other side.
• Bhavnagar Railway Line: Similar progress has been achieved here — one
side completed with bitumen laying, while expansion joint work continues on the other.
2. Substation Earthwork Near Juval Rupavati:
Around 25 km from Ahmedabad, near Juval Rupavati village,
the GETCO 66kV substation that earlier obstructed the alignment has been
successfully relocated. The retaining wall (R-wall) is complete, and final
earthwork and bitumen laying are progressing rapidly.
3. Dholera Activation Area Access:
An interchange providing access to the Dholera Activation
Area is under construction. The main alignment is complete, and earthwork for
the ramps is currently underway.
4. Finishing Works and Lane Marking:
Only minor stretches of lane marking and road finishing remain — roughly
100 metres each — expected to be completed soon.
