The Central Government has approved the Dholera railway project, strengthening Dholera connectivity with a new Sarkhej–Dholera double rail line and a Dholera–Lothal spur line, boosting access to Dholera Airport, industries, and key heritage hubs.
In a major push to infrastructure-led development in Gujarat, the Central Government has approved two key railway projects that will significantly enhance Dholera railway connectivity and strengthen the region’s role as a future economic hub.
As per official gazette notifications issued by the Ministry of Railways (Western Railway – Construction Organisation), a new 109.16 km broad-gauge double railway line between Sarkhej and Dholera will be developed. In addition, a 20.40 km spur rail line connecting Dholera to Lothal has also received approval. Together, these projects form a 129 km new rail network that places Dholera at the center of Gujarat’s next infrastructure leap.
Faster Execution with Central Clearance
To ensure rapid implementation, the Centre has empowered district-level officers as competent authorities for land acquisition and legal processes. The Prant Officers of West Ahmedabad (Vejalpur) and Dhandhuka (Dholera region) have been authorized to handle approvals, clearances, and compensation matters. This move is expected to significantly cut delays and fast-track project execution.
Strategic Importance for Dholera
The new rail lines will play a crucial role in improving Dholera connectivity by directly linking:
Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR)
The upcoming Dholera International Airport
The Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex
This connectivity will boost passenger movement, industrial logistics, and tourism while supporting large-scale investments planned in and around Dholera SIR.
Under Western Railway’s Bhavnagar Division
Both projects fall under the Bhavnagar Division of Western Railway, ensuring seamless integration with existing rail networks. Once completed, the Dholera railway corridor is expected to attract industries, reduce travel time from Ahmedabad, and accelerate the vision of Dholera as India’s first planned smart industrial city.
